October 28, 2020 at 7:00 PM Central: Aeriale Johnson  Still We Rise Up: Using Poetry in the Early Childhood Classroom to Heal and to Hope Audience K-2  Teaching children to read with deep comprehension is of the utmost importance. Teaching children to prioritize and manage their social-emotional well-being is of the utmost importance. Too often these two truths are perceived as mutually exclusive. Poetry offers us innumerable opportunities to engage in close reading and to do so for the purpose of honoring our humanity and that of others. In this session, we will explore resources and strategies for using poetry to teach children to read and to live.

Register for the Raising Our Voices: Empowering All Learners Today to Change the World Tomorrow. You can register for the complete series of Academy Months (October to June) or register by the month. It is not too late to get in on the recorded sessions from October 14. We hope to see you there!

"Hop To It: Poetry to Get You Moving"is an amazing anthology of poems complied by Janet Wong and Sylvia Vardell. Poets included in Hop To It include the likes of these incredible writers: Rose Cappelli, Renee M. LaTulippe, JoAnn Early Macken, Janet Wong, Eileen Spinelli, and Cynthia Leitich Smith to name only a handful. Each page in this fun anthology contains sidebars that feature teaching ideas and supplemental topics. One such example from "All Tied, Bases Loaded" by Michelle Heidenrich Barnes on page 79 is the suggestion to "Invite your listeners to be the crowd at a baseball game while you read the poem out loud like a sportscaster." Another sidebar on page 79 tell the reader about narrative poetry. Yet another provides a brief shout out. "Read about Marnie Johnson, the first female pitcher to play on a professional men's baseball team: "Marmie on the Mound" by Leah Henderson. Books and Company, an independent book store in Oconomowoc, WI has Janet Wong's books featured. https://www.booksco.com/wsra-read-way-2020-2021
